Peleș, Bran and Brașov in a day.
North out of Bucharest by eight, up the Prahova valley to Peleș while the morning light is still on its terraces, over the pass to Bran for the courtyard and the ridge behind it, then an hour in Brașov’s old square before the drive home. Bucharest is a night city.
The cellars under Lipscani were merchants’ vaults long before anyone put a bar in them, and the streets above stay busy until three. Ghost walks past the burnt facades, beer halls with their own breweries, the interwar boulevards lit up. Worth going out with someone who knows which door is which.
The bears come out at dusk.
Romania holds more brown bears than the rest of Europe put together. The hides in the forest above Brașov get you seated an hour before feeding time, and Libearty at Zărnești is the daytime version: a sanctuary for rescued animals, not a show.
The concrete years, explained.
The Palace of the Parliament is still the heaviest building on earth, and a fifth of old Bucharest was cleared to make room for it. Guides who queued for rationed bread walk you along the boulevard it replaced, past the balcony of December 1989, and through what came after.
The frescoes are on the outside.
In Bucovina the monastery walls were painted where the whole village could read them, and five centuries of weather still have not taken the blue off Voroneț. Further south the Saxons fortified their churches instead and stored the winter bacon in the tower. Both need a guide who can read a panel; the tours below have one.
